Dangers Of E-Medicine

The sale of medications over the internet is a humongous business fuelled by low prices, lack of need for a medical prescription and a supposed guarantee of anonymity.

But the medicine that is purchased may be adulterated, stolen, contrabanded, past its expiry date and in the worst case; contain deadly compounds.

A study published by the European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines says that 62 per cent of the pharmaceuticals sold online are false and do not meet the minimum standards for health, including those intended for serious cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and psychiatric conditions. Ninety-five per cent of the online pharmaceuticals studied operate illegally and many pharmaceutical companies sponsor the internet sites.

Precisely targeted radiation therapy can eradicate tumours that have spread to other parts of the body, offering more months or years of life to patients who have no other options. The new radiation techniques can attack metastases - tumours that have spread - one by one.

Experiments in 29 patients showed the radiation stopped all the tumours in six, or 21 per cent of the patients, for anywhere between 10 months and more than two years. This was proof of principle in patients who had failed the standard therapies and had few, if any, remaining options.
